What does a desktop converter actually give up?
Portability. It runs on one Windows machine, so it is no use to you from someone else's computer, and it takes disk space and CPU that a hosted service would otherwise supply. If you convert video twice a year, installing something is the more expensive option.
Is there a file size limit?
No. Because nothing is uploaded there is no bandwidth for anyone to meter, so a 10 GB file converts the same way a 10 MB one does. Conversion time depends on your own processor.
